To insure a proper hit and a straight shaft, the blanks used are cured over many months. 

Each pass on the lathe only takes off a tiny bit of material, and then the shaft must cure again for months. 

The shaft you get may have been in the works for a year!
 
Face Machining
In order to have a straight cue, the face where the shaft meets the butt must result in a straight cue. 

As some (older) butts do NOT have a squared-off face, the shaft must be adjusted to the butt for a tight fit and a straight cue. 

Any cue made at Jerico is squared-off and straight.
